About Southern Hokkaido

Southern Hokkaido is famous for its legendary "Japow," averaging over 600 inches of snow each season, making it a true powder paradise. This region also offers expert skiers and riders unmatched off-piste and side-country terrain. Niseko, located just 62 miles from Sapporo, serves as the ideal base for international travelers.

The vibrant area of Grand Hirafu offers a lively après-ski scene with cozy bars, trendy shops, and relaxing hot springs. Culinary delights abound, ranging from Michelin-starred sushi to hearty ramen, showcasing Japan’s exceptional cuisine. From Niseko, you'll have the chance to ski and explore nearby Rusutsu, Kiroro, and Moiwa resorts, all while soaking in stunning views of Mt. Yōtei, known as “the Mt. Fuji of Hokkaido.”

What to Expect

Map of Japan.
TravelDepending on your departure point in North America, flights to Japan typically range from 11 to 14 hours. After landing in Tokyo, a quick two-hour domestic flight will take you to Sapporo. We can assist with booking your flights, often at discounted rates, or you can arrange them independently.
TerrainSouthern Hokkaido is home to lower angle slopes with perfectly spaced Japanese Oak trees blanketed by an average of 600” light, fluffy powder annually. Whether you crave side-country powder or prefer to keep it mellow, discover secret stashes and incredible runs with the safety, knowledge and fun of an expert guide.
CultureSouthern Hokkaido is the perfect introduction to the unmatched and unique culture of Japan. English is widely spoken and the town and resorts are brimming with traditional restaurants, sake and whiskey tastings and local culture. Onsen (hot springs) are the perfect way to resort and relax before and after your day on the slopes.
Our GuidesOur local ski and snowboard guides bring extensive experience and expertise, ensuring the highest level of safety and enjoyment for our skiers. Highly certified and professional, they closely monitor local storm cycles and weather conditions to choose the best resort for each day. If your ski day takes you outside of Niseko, your guide will conveniently pick you up at your hotel in a private van.
EquipmentNiseko receives 600" of snowfall annually, so powder skis (101+ mm) are highly recommended. If you don’t have a ski like this in your personal quiver, we can arrange for you to rent the perfect pair to ensure the best possible experience in Japan. Backcountry packs, with beacon, probe and shovel are required and available for rent, as much of the guided skiing takes place in uncontrolled, off-piste zones.

What to PackIn January, Hokkaido temperatures range from 12°F to 28°F, making appropriate clothing essential. Due to heavy snowfall, stormy conditions and strong winds are common, so we recommend bringing boot heaters, hand warmers, and face protection like Buffs. Layering is key to adapting to changing conditions, so be sure to pack multiple layers. We'll share a full packing list prior to departure.
